Precollegiate Activities
Pre-Collegiate activities are the first stop for high school students and parents interested in knowing more
about FAU's engineering program. Engineering based pre-collegiate activities enable FAU's College of Engineering and
Computer Science to effectively interface with large numbers of students (K-12), and to encourage them to consider majors
in engineering, math or science.
JETS (Junior Engineering Technical Society)
An organization that promotes interest in engineering, science, mathematics, and technology. JETS offers a program
called TEAMS, Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science that enables teams of high school students to
learn team development and problem-solving skills, often with an engineering mentor, and then to participate in an
open-book, open-discussion engineering problem competition. Teams learn how the mathematics and science concepts they
are learning in high school are applied to real-world problems. FAU's College of Engineering and Computer Science hosts
a TEAMS competition that is ranked nationally.
Scholarship Program:
Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering (SECME)
An exceptionally successful program whose primary objective is to increase the number of minority students in
engineering, math and science through a consortium of 40 universities, 70 industry/government agencies, 106 school systems,
19,199 students, and 850 K-12 schools in 15 states. At each member school a SECME Team is formed to plan and initiate the
program. Team members participate in workshops hosted by a University each year. The team members learn how to implement
the program through the engineering faculty of the hosting university. Through DESS, FAU offers a full tuition scholarship
to each participating high school in Broward and Palm Beach counties and floating scholarships for a total of twenty-five.
We also host annual campus visits for each county.
- SECME Newsletter
Published quarterly the SECME newsletter is an effective vehicle for sharing program information with industry and
school system participants, the FAU SECME Newsletter has been used as a national model by the Executive Director's office
in Atlanta. The Newsletter is another way to remind those in our service area that FAU is an important community resource.
Summer Program:
School Visits:
FAU Tour
DESS will arrange university tours for Middle and High School student groups upon request. Students who may be
interested in studying engineering at FAU are encouraged to contact DESS for an appointment as well.
Middle and High School Career Day
DESS makes many formal and informal Career Day presentations to Middle and High School students in both Broward and
Palm Beach counties and participates in honors and awards programs throughout the school year.
