ESP Journal
At the start of ESP 2008, the instructors informed their classes that the College of Engineering and Computer Science would be producing the first annual ESP Journal. This journal contains a collection of the most impressive and outstanding assignments that were submitted to each course in ESP 2008.

About ESP
The FAU College of Engineering and Computer Science is pleased to announce the Engineering Scholars' Program 2009, (pending grant approval - notification expected March 2009). As part of the prestigious State of Florida Governor's Summer Program, ESP offers dual-enrollment credit courses in engineering and computer science for high achieving high school students of Broward and Palm Beach counties.

ESP engages students in challenging educational activities not available in high school and provides them opportunities to explore engineering and computer science as possible career choices. Instruction is provided by top FAU engineering faculty. Team projects utilizing state-of-the-art laboratories of the FAU College of Engineering and Computer Science are emphasized. A unique system of class mentors assists students with the transition to college-level work. Class sizes are limited to approximately twenty students. Applications are currently being accepted through Friday, March 6, 2009.

ESP - 2009 Course Offerings

Each course carries three semester-hours of academic credit and will be conducted on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, June 8 thru June 26, 2009. There will be nine class meetings over the three week period that meet from 9:30 to 4:30 p.m. with a break for lunch.

Program Dates
Monday 6/8, Wednesday 6/10, Friday 6/12, Monday 6/15, Wednesday 6/17, Friday 6/19, Monday 6/22, Wednesday 6/24 and Friday 6/26

Application Deadline: Friday, March 6, 2009
NOTE: This is a firm deadline and no applications will be accepted after this date.

Program Eligibilty
ESP - 2009 is open to Broward and Palm Beach students who are enrolled in Science/Engineering Magnet programs, International Baccalaureate Magnet programs, or who have been staffed into a gifted program in their home high school. Students must be entering grades 10, 11 or 12, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. A letter of recommendation from an instructor or guidance counselor is required. Students must also have taken one of the following tests prior to being admitted into the ESP program:

  • SAT - minimum score 440 Verbal & 440 Math
  • ACT - minimum score 17 English, 19 Math, & 18 Reading
  • CPT (Accuplacer) - minimum score 83 Reading Comprehension, 83 Sentence Skills, & 72 Elementary Algebra

Even though students may meet the program criteria and have participated in the ESP program in the past, that does not guarantee acceptance into the 2009 program. PSAT scores and SAT scores taken in 7th grade are not accepted. A copy of student’s transcripts are required with each application.

NOTE: The FAU Testing and Evaluation Office offers a list of tests that can be taken on a walk-in or appointment basis depending on which test is being offered. For more information select the following address: www.fau.edu/testing

Program Cost
The tuition is waived for qualified Broward and Palm Beach County students because of an articulation agreement between the university and those school systems. Participants are responsible for their own transportation and for lunches. For first time students there is a $35 registration fee to cover a photo i.d. ($10) and a mandatory transportation fee even if the student is not driving ($25). For returning students with FAU photo i.d.'s the fee is $25.
NOTE: There are a very limited number of need based scholarships available.
